Mayor Bill De Blasio Set To Campaign For Hillary Clinton In Iowa

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio is heading to Iowa on Friday to campaign for fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton.

De Blasio originally held off on supporting Clinton in her presidential bid even though he served as campaign manager during her 2000 New York State Senate run.

He finally endorsed Clinton in October.

Now de Blasio says Clinton's ideals are inline with his progressive agenda, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reports.

"I think it would be tremendous to have a president who understands our needs and be someone we can work with so closely," he said adding he'll do anything he can to help. "Knock on doors or make phone calls or rally the troops, whatever will be helpful."

De Blasio's progressive credentials may help, especially among liberal Iowa voters considering Clinton's rival Bernie Sanders, CBS2 reported.

As a former political operative, de Blasio has experienced campaigning in Iowa.

"I happen to have been out there campaigning in previous cycles so I know a lot about the caucus process for someone who doesn't come from there," de Blasio said.

Because of her local ties, de Blasio thinks a Clinton presidency would be great for the city, Haskell reported.
