Suspect In Custody In Attempted Luring Of 10-Year-Old Girl In Jackson Heights
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --A suspect was in custody on Friday night, in connection with an attempted luring that took place in Jackson Heights, Queens.
At 7:40 a.m. on Friday, a 10-year-old girl was walking along 81st Street, when an unknown male on the opposite side of the street motioned for her to come to him.
The victim ignored the suspect and continued walking, and the suspect crossed the street. He followed her and reached his hand out, prompting her to run and yell for help.
A school crossing guard responded to the shouts and confronted the suspect, causing him to flee the location.
Encounters like this are every parent's fear.
"It's very sad for a mom, nobody wants their kid to be in trouble," Saharin Jahan told CBS2's Tracee Carrasco.
"That's terrible, but thank god that I always pick her up, but it made me feel pretty bad," Gabriela Mendez said.
Mendez's daughter knows what to do if ever in that situation.
"Run away and say help," she said.
Police plastered wanted posters with the man's picture all around the neighborhood. Police announced the arrest on Friday night, but there was no word on any charges.
"I feel scared for the kids who live in this neighborhood," Siobhan Dingwall said.
