Bronx Police Precinct To Get New $70 Million Home
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One police precinct in the Bronx is getting a multi-million dollar upgrade.
CBS2's Alice Gainer reported the city has earmarked nearly $70 million for a new building for the 40th precinct. The building they are currently in at 257 Alexander Avenue was built in the 1920s.
The new building will be located at East 149th Street and Saint Ann's in an effort to improve police and community relations.
"That's pretty steep, but I think it's worth it because this is outdated," Angel Perez of the South Bronx told CBS2.
The new 43,500-square foot building will be the first NYPD station with a green roof. CBS2 reported the Bjarke Ingel's Group was commissioned by the NYC Department of Design and Construction.
The group's design resembles a stack of bricks which they say is a nod to early New York police stations.
The new building will also house a community room where police will hold classes and other events that will help to encourage dialogue with residents.
Candido Lopez of the South Bronx told CBS2 she would be willing to go to one of the community classes.
"Sure, anything to help out the community," Lopez said. "I think that's a great idea."
Not everyone in the South Bronx was happy with the amount of money going into the new building, however.
"Oh no, they should be doing something else with it," one resident told CBS2. "We have enough policing problems going on."
It is not known when the start date of the construction for the new building will be.
