NYC Babysitter Accused Of Scalding 2-Year-Old For Not Washing Hands

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A babysitter in New York City is accused of holding a 2-year-old boy's hand under hot water and scalding him so severely that he may require surgery. The reason? He wouldn't wash his sticky hands.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown says 20-year-old Yvette Douglas was arrested on felony assault and child endangerment charges.

Authorities say the incident occurred Tuesday morning while Douglas was watching 2-year-old Reyes Cosme and his 3-year-old sister.

Prosecutors say Cosme didn't want to wash his sticky hands after eating waffles, angering Douglas. They say she held his hands under hot water for about two minutes while he cried.

Brown says Cosme suffered burns to both sides of his hands and may require surgery.

Douglas was awaiting arraignment Thursday. It wasn't immediately clear whether she had an attorney.

Another New York babysitter was charged last month after being accused of abusing a 6-month-old multiple times.
