Anthem Of The Seas Fast Facts

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- One of the world's newest and biggest cruise ships was caught in a winter storm so powerful that the captain ordered all passengers confined to their cabins. The massive Royal Caribbean 'Anthem Of The Seas' was headed to Port Canaveral, Florida from its home port of Cape Liberty, New Jersey on Saturday when it ran into high winds and rough seas in the Atlantic Ocean.

Here are some facts about the ship:

  • 'Anthem' made its maiden voyage from Southampton, England on April 22, 2015.
  • She was constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany,
  • The ship can carry over 4,900 guests in nearly 2,100 staterooms and a crew of 1,500.
  • The ship weighs 168,666 tons, is 1,141 feet long and 136 feet wide
  • There are 18 decks including 16 passenger decks.
  • 4 bow thrusters with nearly 4,700 horsepower each propel the ship.
  • Amenities include 20 restaurants, four pools, a Broadway-style theater, a surf simulator, a wave pool, massive rock-climbing wall, skydiving simulator set in a recirculating indoor recreational vertical wind tunnel, bumper cars, a large indoor gym with a full-size basketball court.
  • The "NorthStar" observation tower located at the forward end of the top deck is a glass-walled capsule on the end of a 135 foot crane arm to lift groups of up to 14 guests up and over the edge of the ship, reaching heights of up to 300 feet above sea level.
