Students Wrap 3,000 Plastic Bags Around School To Raise Environmental Awareness

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)—Students at a high school in Brooklyn took their crusade against plastic bags to the streets this morning.

Special education students at James Madison High School accomplished their mission after wrapping the entire building with over 3,000 plastic bags

Tenth-grader Zuhaiv Hussain initially thought it was a crazy idea.

"Because what happens if we don't have a lot of bags to wrap around the whole school? But we did, we could wrap it around about three or four times," Hussain told WCBS 880's Marla Diamond.

The idea came to environmental science teacher Brian Schoenfelder after a school trip to the Fresh Kills landfill.

"The take-away is they have to change behavior, you can't just tell them you have to change your behavior,"  Schoenfelder said.

He said the plastic bags will all be recycled.
