8-Year-Old Girl, Cop Hailed As Heroes For Saving Life Of Her Baby Brother In Hampton Bays

HAMPTON BAYS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An 8-year-old girl and a local cop are being hailed as heroes after helping to save her baby brother's life.

CBS2's Jennifer McLogan reports the second-grader made the call to 911 for her parents who don't speak English.

"My brother is about to die," the young girl told the dispatcher. "He can't breathe or nothing."

The girl spoke calmly to the dispatcher during the scary situation involving her brother Christopher.

DISPATCHER: And what's going on with your brother? How old is he?

CHILD: He's almost 1-year-old.

DISPATCHER: He's 1? Is he breathing at all?

CHILD: Nope.

DISPATCHER: Is your mom there?

CHILD: Yes.

DISPATCHER: Do you see his chest going up and down? Do you see him breathing at all?

CHILD: No, but he's turning purple.

Southampton Town Police Offier Kristian LoRusso was first on the scene to tend to the baby.

"Coming up on the house, see front door open and mom's there," he told CBS2. "Go running in the house and he wasn't breathing at this point."

LoRusso was told the young boy had a seizure. He immediately started CPR.

"I started with pats on the back to dislodge, if he was choking, and I started with three CPR cycles of that. Couple more smacks on the back and then I heard the greatest thing I ever heard, other than my own kids being born, this baby crying," he explained.

LoRusso said it felt like the longest two minutes of his life.

"All of a sudden the Westhampton beach ambulance and police came and they were my knights in shining armor, helping me, and we got the oxygen on him and baby Christopher is with us," he told CBS2.

Southampton Town Police Lt. Susan Ralph called the little girl's composure amazing.

"Yes, she is 8 years old, was calm, cool and collected on the phone with the 911 dispatcher," Ralph told CBS2. "It is fantastic."

The family has now signed up for CPR training at their local church.

The Westhampton Beach community is planning to honor LoRusso and the young girl.
