Black History Month: The Influence Of Black Lives Matter

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- The Black Lives Matter movement has unarguably garnered the attention and influence of the public over the last several years.

Time Magazine says when it considered candidates for its "Person Of The Year" for 2015, one of the finalists was the Black Lives Matter movement.

The organization has made its mark all the way to presidential campaigns. The press secretary for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is a Black Lives Matter supporter.

Movement co-founder Patrice Cullors describes its structure as decentralized, but coordinated.

"Advancing and empowering black communities... a deep commitment to discontinuing the act of killing black people at the hands of law enforcement. Pushing for black labor, and the fight to have affordable wages," Cullors told WCBS 880's Jane Irving Tillman.

Many of the organization's goals resonate with a movement well-established in American history.

"In a lot of ways, we've pulled from the panthers, the black liberation movement from the 60s and 70s," Cullors said.
