Police: Man Caught On Video Knocking Over Statue Outside Brooklyn Church

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) —   A guardian angel statue outside of a Brooklyn church could have used one for itself. Now, police are trying to find the person who knocked it down.

Surveillance footage shows what appears to be a teenage boy approaching a Catholic church to knowck down a concrete guardian angel statue.

Pastor Wlodzimirez Las called the act heartbreaking.

“I would tell them this is our spiritual place. We want to serve other people. If he can’t leave us alone,” he told CBS2’s Emily Smith.

Police confirmed it happened in early February, around 4 a.m. It looks like the vandal knocked the angel to the ground in one hit outside of Our Lady Of Consolation on Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg.

Security cameras had been set up over the last few years due to a few other vandalism incidents involving the statues, but none appear to be linked.

“They probably don’t agree with the views of the church, but I don’t think that’s the appropriate way. It’s very insulting to the people who believe,” Claudia Garcia said.

“I guess they could be a teenager doing it for kicks and giggles,” Julie Lee said.

As of Tuesday, police had not tracked down a suspect. Authorities were asking anyone with information to give them a call.

The church pastor said the statue costs about $500.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, visit the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
