4 People Slashed, Stabbed In Separate Incidents In Brooklyn, The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD was dealing with four more slashings and stabbings this weekend.

The latest slashing attack happened on 173rd Street near Southern Boulevard in the Bronx. Some said the attack was random, while others said it was a neighborhood fight, CBS2's Hazel Sanchez reported.

"It is a little bit out of the normality of this neighborhood to get a slashing the way that it's been happening in the city," said Bronx resident Joseph Cepeda.

Police said around 3 a.m. Sunday, a 32-year-old man was slashed in the face. His attacker took off.

Kenneth Wade lives in the neighborhood and said he witnessed the attack.

"I seen a little commotion; arguing going on right here. There were some people – I don't know; I couldn't see; some were young, some were older. They (were) trying to break it up," Wade said. "But eventually, somebody swung and did something. And then they broke."

This was the third attack to happen in the Bronx over the weekend.

A 26-year-old woman was slashed and stabbed by two men who jumped out of a car that pulled up on Saturday around 5:30 p.m., on Holland Avenue off Burke Avenue in Williamsbridge.

She was stabbed in the abdomen and slashed on the right ear. Police said she did not know her attackers.

Maria DeJesus said she feels uneasy working at Estrella Tropical in Williamsbridge. The victim in that case was one of her regular customers.

"I'm afraid, you know? It happened on the block, and I work here. I live around here," she said. "I'm afraid -- it happens all the time."

Doli Nessa lives a block away and said all the recent slashings around the city make her afraid to walk alone.

"When I walk, I'm not feeling anything. But if I hear anything it makes me nervous," she said. "Makes me scared, you know?"

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man was stabbed outside his home in the Butler Houses in the Bronx around 5 a.m. Saturday. Police said the suspect demanded his sneakers and then stabbed the victim in the left arm, the abdomen and the right thigh. He is in critical condition at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital.

A 59-year-old woman was also slashed in Brooklyn Sunday. The Brooklyn woman was slashed inside a Hawthorne Street home in Prospect Lefferts Gardens around 3:30 a.m.

1010 WINS reports that she is currently in critical condition at Kings County Hospital Center.

Police arrested suspect 57-year-old Basil Belgrave at the scene in the Brooklyn slashing.

Police on Sunday also released surveillance video of a man who slashed another man in a food cart line on Jerome Avenue on Valentine's Day and then fled the scene.

Police said there have been more than 530 slashings or stabbings since January of this year in New York City, compared to just over 440 in the same time period last year. The total amounts to a 20 percent increase.

Last week, there were three slashing attacks in the span of 48 hours.

There has been a nearly 20 percent jump in slashings and stabbings in the city.

Community activist Tony Herbert said the violence needs to stop.

"I want to say this to every young black and Hispanic male and female in our community – we are killing ourselves. We're creating a modern-day genocide that truly is wiping out a generation; that is going to take away from our community being able to move forward," Herbert said, "and we can't keep doing this."
