GOP Lawmakers Proposing Looser Gun Laws In New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Lawmakers in New Jersey are proposing looser gun laws.

New Jersey's Republican Assembly leader is set to unveil legislation to loosen the state's tough gun possession laws.

Minority Leader Jon Bramnick tells NJ Advance Media the legislation would make it easier for prosecutors to reduce gun possession charges.

Bramnick and Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon are set to unveil the legislation Tuesday.

Democratic Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto says he won't advance the bills, adding the legislation would weaken the state's gun laws.

The legislation comes after several cases grabbed headlines. A prosecutor this week dropped a felony gun charge against a Pennsylvania corrections officer who was the victim of a drunken driving crash.

Bramnick also cited the case of an actor who used an air gun while making an independent film in Woodbridge and was charged with a gun-related offense.
