Storm Brings Snow, Freezing Rain And Wind To Tri-State Area

YORKTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Snow, sleet and rain is falling across the Tri-State area Tuesday evening.

While New York City and its immediate suburbs will mostly see rain from this storm, a winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of northwestern New Jersey, the lower Hudson Valley and Connecticut.

As CBS2 Meteorologist Elise Finch reported, those areas are already seeing a mix of wet snow and sleet. The real problem, however, will be the freezing rain which could cause problems on the roads.

Snow totals should only be between a trace to 2 inches for the areas under the winter weather advisory, but Finch warned this storm packs a one-two punch.

Round two on Wednesday promises to bring more significant rain and windy conditions.

In Yorktown, as well as much of the Tri-State area, the winter has been a mild one but snow was falling Tuesday afternoon, CBS2's Lou Young reported.

Many schools along the Westchester and Putnam county line let out early in anticipation of the storm.

"They did go home early today because of this, but compared to last year this is a piece of cake. No big deal," said Yorktown resident Cathy Gironda.

"It's not bad now, but in case it gets icy there still would have been another 15-20 minutes before the younger ones would have been dismissed," said Ann Zupa, of Yorktown.

Though there is a light dusting on the grassy areas, the roads remain slick and free of ice -- for now. Officials in the area are concerned about slick roads freezing overnight, in which case the salt and brine trucks will be deployed.
