Report: NJ Police Captain Was On Drugs, Bath Salts, At Time Of Fatal Crash

OCEAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Toxicology test results show a senior off-duty New Jersey police officer killed in a crash was driving under the influence of illegal narcotics, prescription drugs and alcohol at the time.

Documents provided by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office to the Asbury Park Press show that a dozen chemicals were found in the blood of Deal Police Capt. Earl Alexander IV, including bath salts.

Alexander was heading southbound on Route 71 in Ocean Township last month when he lost control of his car. The vehicle flipped onto its side and crashed into the pole. Alexander died soon after.

The collision was under investigation by the Ocean Township police Traffic Safety Bureau and the Monmouth County Serious Collision Response Team.

Test results found Alexander had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood, as well as illegal stimulant drugs, the prescription antidepressant known as Lexapro, a prescription sleep medication known as Ambien, and amphetamines.

Alexander served as a Deal police captain, as well as an assistant fire chief of Deal Fire Company 2.
