NYC Food Truck Lunch: Brie, Proscuitto and Strawberry Preserves Grilled Cheese From Gorilla Cheese

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

In May, the Gorilla Cheese Truck will be celebrating their 5-year anniversary! That's more like 20 years for food trucks, which seem to come and go on a regular basis. Gorilla Cheese must be doing something right, which was confirmed by the addition of a second Gorilla Cheese truck a couple of years ago.

With the weather cold and rainy, a warm, gooey grilled cheese sandwich is just the ticket. They've also expanded the menu with chicken chunks, but that's like going to a bagel store and ordering toast.

Gorilla Cheese has enough options to make up your own customized sandwich, but with Today's Melt and 9 other specialty sammys, it's easier to just choose one of the choices from their menu. All specialty sandwiches are $8, but for $10 you can get tater tots and a drink, which we did.

We ordered the brie, proscuitto and strawberry preserves specialty sandwich (#9). It reminded us of the baked brie with raspberry preserves we sometimes serve on family holidays.

When we got back to the office, opened the wrapper and pulled apart the two halves, we were greeted by the picture above: gooey cheese, prosciutto and strawberry preserves inside perfectly grilled white bread.

The triple cream brie cheese was exactly as advertised, with a very creamy taste and texture, tinged with strawberry jam and proscuitto. Mmm good!

We usually prefer raspberry to strawberry preserves, but adding prosciutto to the mix really made up for the difference. It added a touch of saltiness to go with the sweet jam, and proscuitto di Parma stood up to both the jam and cheese.

This was an excellent sandwich! It looked a little thin at first, but once we started eating it, the sammy was rich and delicious.

The tater tots were lightly salted and good for a side dish. French fries are more our speed, but judging from the other people on line, tater tots are pretty popular too.

Gorilla Cheese hits the usual food truck spots in midtown and downtown for lunch. You can find them on Twitter here, on Facebook here, and their website is here.

With two Gorilla Cheese trucks, chances are you won't have to go far to enjoy one of their lunches.
