Police: Scammer Arrested For Selling Fake 'Hamilton' Tickets

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A scammer is behind bars after being accused of selling a Manhattan woman fake "Hamilton" tickets.

Danielle Posner told CBS2's Valerie Castro that she thought she found a deal on tickets for the hit Broadway show -- $175 a piece.

"This looked real. He had four tickets. He said he and his girlfriend really wanted to go, but the other couple bailed," Posner explained to CBS2.

"Hamilton" is one of the hottest tickets on Broadway, as some fans are shelling out thousands for tickets.

Posner arranged to meet the seller in person in a public place. She was even more convinced when she saw the tickets in his hand.

"Full out, legit Ticketmaster ticket. Same back print as a real ticket, same picture, everything looked real," Posner told CBS2.

However, Posner's boyfriend was skeptical. He posed as another buyer and emailed the same seller to see if the tickets were still available.

"So he wrote back and said he had the four tickets, and that's when I got really upset," Posner said.

Ticketmaster confirmed the tickets Posner bought were fake. After learning that, she set up a new deal using her boyfriend as bait and made sure the police were there.

"I said I'm going to get him arrested, this is not okay," Posner said. "They found a stack this thick of the same four tickets repeated over and over and over again, so he's been selling these like crazy."

Police arrested the seller when he showed up.

The Better Business Bureau told CBS2 that people can take steps to avoid counterfeit tickets by using a reputable retailer like StubHub or Ticketmaster.

They also say pay with a credit card, so you can dispute any fraud, and be skeptical about anything that sounds too good to be true.
