Seeing A Chiropractor Might Help Rid You Of Debilitating Headaches

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If you wake up with a headache in the morning, you're not alone.

In fact, one out of 10 adults gets constant and extremely painful headaches. But there is a way to ease the pain, and do it without medication.

As CBS2's Mary Calvi reported, headaches affect nearly half of adults in the U.S. For some, they can be debilitating.

"They were bad, where I'd end up in bed," said Corrie-Beth Lipowski.

But for Lipowski, there's little opportunity for downtime.

"It's go, go, go, non-stop," she said.

Lipowski owns Pure Physique with her husband in Yorktown, New York. And with a little boy at home and another on the way, she is always busy.

"Medication was recommended," she said, but "I really wanted to get to the root and be able to figure out what was going on."

Lipowski said a visit to the chiropractor changed everything.

To many people's surprise, headaches are often caused by a misalignment somewhere in the spine, often due to what's called "text neck," Calvi reported.

"Corrie-Beth had lack of natural curve in her neck," said Dr. John Sayegh.

Dr. Sayegh said the increased pressure causes muscle tension around the neck, and thus headaches.

"I found her lower neck, C-6 -- the sixth cervical vertebrae -- out of alignment and I made an adjustment," Dr. Sayegh said.

A pain in the neck can also become debilitating for Michael Della Rocca.

"I couldn't turn my head all the way," he said.

Carrying heavy equipment on the job caused the problem, until his chiropractor fixed a misalignment in his spine.

"It changed my life," he said.

For Lipowski, it took only the first visit to immediately feel better. And now, she sees the chiropractor once a week.

"I feel like I'm ready to take on our gym, take on the world, be the mom that I want to be," she said.

For immediate headache relief at home, Dr. Sayegh suggested to roll a towel and lay down, placing the towel in the curve of the neck. That will at least give you temporary relief by taking the pressure off of the muscles there.
