City Councilman Suggests Reminding Voters Of Elections They've Missed

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A member of the New York City Council has come up with an idea to get more people out to the polls.

As WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported, Bronx City Councilman Ritchie Torres (D-15th) is pushing a bill that would require the city Board of Elections to send all eligible voters a "voter history card."

The card would list all the elections they have or have not participated in over a four-year period.

Torres rejected to the notion that the plan amounts to shaming.

"It's to empower them with information, to empower people to hold themselves accountable as voters, and to get them to think of voting not as a right, but as a civic obligation," he said.

The city's Campaign Finance Board reports only a quarter of New York City voters cast a ballot in the 2014 general election.
