NYC Food Truck Lunch: Lobster Mac & Cheese From Red Hook Lobster Truck

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

Lobster rolls are often associated with breezy summer days in the Northeast, but it's cold and windy right now. A lobster roll is just too light for our lunch in the middle of winter. So what's a lobster lover to do? How about lobster macaroni and cheese!

As with everything lobster, it's on the expensive side. Lobster mac & cheese at the Red Hook Lobster Truck costs $15, which is about $5 more than we usually spend for lunch. (You can get just mac & cheese without the lobster for $6 at the truck, but what fun is that?)

Opening the top of the container, there was gooey cheese stuck to the lid, which we dutifully put back on the lobster and macaroni. Gooey cheese is always a good sign. The top of lunch appeared to be lightly charred from a small cooking torch.

The macaroni were large elbow macaroni, not the small ones generally used for mac & cheese. This gave the cheese sauce even more surface area on which to stick.

Speaking of cheese sauce, it was creamy and had a nice tang. There was obviously a mix of several cheeses in the sauce, with at least gruyere and cheddar, or at least cheeses along those lines. Light herbs and a little black pepper added a little more flavor.

As for the lobster, there was plenty. Mixed into the container was meat from two whole claws, plus other assorted pieces. They certainly didn't skimp on the lobster.

We know lobster is not an everyday lunch event, but the lobster mac & cheese was a nice treat as we approach the end of winter. Spring and summer are just around the corner, which means lobster rolls for everyone!

You can find the Red Hook Lobster Truck on Twitter here, on Facebook here, and their website is here. They started with a sit-down restaurant in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and now have a few other locations in NYC, outposts in Washington DC, and in Montauk.

Whatever you lobster needs, they can be fulfilled at Red Hook Lobster Pound.
