Two Bobcats Spotted In Westchester County

SOMERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A town in northern Westchester County is abuzz after two bobcats were spotted.

A photo posted to social media shows two bobcats – estimated at more than 50 pounds each – showing up outside a home in Valley Drive in Somers.

The owner, who didn't want to be on camera, told CBS2's Scott Rapoport that she has four small dogs and two young children and was scared for their safety.

Sarah Sinkin of Putnam County told CBS2 she understands the owner's fear.

"I have a 12-year-old, so it is scary, but the best thing we can do is keep an eye on our kids," she said.

Bobcat sightings in Westchester County do happen from time-to-time. A bobcat was seen outside a Warwick home in December 2014 and strolling through a yard in Ardsley in October of the same year.

News of the bobcat sighting has grabbed people's attention in Somers, but the residents are not rattled.

"They been here for years. It's nothing new. I've seen them on the farm quite a bit," Bob Stuart of Stuart's Farm told CBS2. "I've never heard of any bobcat attacking anybody or bothering anybody."

Darrell Dwyer of Garrison said that bobcats are "not really dangerous."

"Mountain lions would bother me. Mountain lions are big and ferocious. Bobcats are kind of quiet and keep to themselves. They're not really dangerous," Dwyer told CBS2.

A spokesperson for New York's Department of Environmental Conservation told CBS2 that bobcats, like most wildlife, are scared of humans and will most likely run when seen.
