Report: Giants Set To Give Top Corner Janoris Jenkins $62.5 Million

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Giants fans were met with some much-needed good news on Wednesday morning.

It appears that Big Blue has taken a big step toward fixing its league-worst pass defense from a year ago. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, cornerback Janoris Jenkins is poised to sign with New York once the free agency frenzy begins at 4 p.m.

According to the Daily News, the deal will pay Jenkins $62.5 million over five years, with $29 million guaranteed, making him the second-highest paid cornerback in the league behind the Jets' Darrelle Revis.

Known for his solid man-to-man cover skills, Jenkins had been a mainstay in the Rams' secondary over the previous four seasons, recording 10 interceptions and 48 passes defensed.

Initial reports had Jenkins likely returning to the Rams, but a serious push by the Giants during the overnight hours appears to have done the trick.

The eventual signing of Jenkins is expected to be the first of many moves by Giants general manager Jerry Reese in an attempt to fix what was the NFL's 32nd-ranked defense in 2015. The Giants struggled mightily against the pass, allowing a whopping 299 yards per game.

Reese is also interested in improving the pass rush. According to several reports he was set to meet with end Olivier Vernon, who played last season for the Miami Dolphins, on Thursday afternoon and was working toward signing Jets tackle Damon Harrison.

On Tuesday, the Giants reached agreement on a one-year deal with defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.
