LI Woman Gets 4 Years Behind Bars For Fatal 2013 DWI Crash

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island woman convicted in the DWI crash that killed her best friend in 2013 is heading to prison.

Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas says Asya Ulmer, 24, was sentenced Wednesday to up to four years behind bars.

The Rockville Centre woman was found guilty of manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and DWI charges in the crash that killed Jennifer Alexis, 21, of Bayside.

In September 2013, Ulmer was driving a 2000 BMW on Centre Avenue near Meehan Street in Rockville Centre, when she hit a parked truck trailer, police said.

Prosecutors say Ulmer's blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit during the crash, which sheared off the roof of her car.

Alexis, who was a passenger in Ulmer's vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash, police said.

Ulmer says she takes responsibility for the death of her friend. Defense attorney Fred Brewington says his client's heart is broken.
