Scam Artists Posing As IRS Agents Continue To Target The Elderly

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- It's a busy season for impostor scam artists, and they have the elderly in their cross-hairs.

As the tax filing deadline approaches, scam artists posing as IRS agents are hard at work targeting the elderly.

Maggie Hamm recently got a call from one.

"He told me he was the IRS and I said to him, 'Really?' I said my husband works for the IRS. Hung up on me then," she told WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs.

The AARP is reminding potential victims that the IRS will never call you and certainly never threaten you over the phone.

"Remember D-T-A, which means don't trust anyone," AARP's Bernard Macias cautioned.

Officials are hoping that those who are targeted will make informed decisions going forward and notify police of impostor scams.
