NYPD: Staten Island Woman Arrested After Body Of Infant Found In Garbage

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was arrested after a newborn baby was pronounced dead after being found unconscious and unresponsive at a residence in Staten Island on Saturday morning, police said.

Authorities arrested 28-year-old Nausheen Rahman and charged her with concealment of a human corpse.

The body of the infant was found in a black trash bag in the garbage collection spot in the front of the home on Richmond Hill Road, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

The medical examiner will have to determine the cause of death. It's unknown if the baby was born alive or stillborn.

Jennifer Goldner lives in the same condo complex. She was unaware the 28-year-old woman was pregnant. She was horrified to hear what happened. Goldner said if the baby was born alive, the mother had lots of options.

"Drop him off at any fire house, go to the hospital, do something. A life deserves more than that," she said.

The young mother had gone to Staten Island North Hospital Friday night because she wasn't feeling well and that's when she said she had given birth five days earlier at home.

The identity of the deceased is pending.
