Gunman Found Dead After Fatal Jersey City Shooting
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities in New Jersey believe a gunman shot and killed himself, after a shooting that left one woman dead and another woman injured.
The shooting occurred at about 7:30 a.m. Monday on Monitor Street off of Johnston Avenue in Jersey City.
Authorities tell CBS2 the shooting appears to be the result of an apparent domestic dispute, and a woman simply trying to get to work ended up caught in the middle.
The woman was in a car with the alleged assailant. When she left the car he allegedly chased her and began shooting. At least six shots were fired right in the middle of the road, CBS2's Scott Rapoport reported.
The woman then got into another vehicle in an attempt to escape, but was shot and killed.
"I see the guy chasing the girl and he's shooting from the back. Like five gunshots," witness Alberto Reyes told CBS2's Rapoport.
"I heard the gunshots and I saw her bleeding on the ground. That's what I saw. It had to be six or seven gunshots," witness Desiree Ramsey said. "She was in a pool of blood just laying there."
Shell casings and glass from shattered car windows littered the pavement at the scene.
Authorities said an innocent bystander was also caught in the crosshairs. Witnesses said the second injured woman was parking her vehicle on the street, heading over to the nearby light rail station.
The bullets started flying, shattering the woman's car windows and leaving her, remarkably, with only minor cuts from the glass.
The gunman was later found dead, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported. Authorities said he was found in a park in Bayonne with a self-inflicted gusnh9ot wound to the head.
Prosecutors said the gunman and the woman killed were a couple, but it is not clear whether they were living together or were estranged.
