LI Teen Awaiting Sentencing In Fatal Drag Race Crash Arrested In Traffic Stop

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island teenager who is awaiting sentencing in a drag-racing crash that killed five has been arrested after a traffic stop.

Cory Gloe, 19, was a passenger in a car that was stopped for speeding in Farmingdale Tuesday night. The car was driven by Adam Rosenthal, 17.

As CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reported, Gloe was back in handcuffs just days after a judge offered him leniency.

Nassau County police say they spotted a small bag of marijuana and a "gravity knife'' in the car. Gloe was arrested on a charge of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

"We have full faith with the district attorney's office that they're going to do a proper investigation and I think at the end of the day, they are going to do what's right and just in this case," Stephen LaMagna, Gloe's attorney said.

Gloe pleaded guilty last week to manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and assault in connection with a 2014 crash that left five other teens dead and several others injured, CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reported.

Prosecutors said Gloe challenged friend Tristan Reichle, 17, to a race on Mother's Day in 2014. Reichle and his passengers were killed when he lost control of his Nissan while driving down Conklin Street in Farmingdale, crossed into oncoming traffic and then hit an SUV.

Prosecutors said Gloe left the scene of the accident in his own car and even though he didn't physically cause the crash, they believed he was at fault, CBS2 reported.

Authorities questioned the decision to grant leniency to Gloe.

"He's got a lot of soul searching to do. You have to wonder if he's on the right path and if youthful offender was the right decision here," Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said.

Last week, a judge offered Gloe a six-month sentence in a youthful offender plea deal that outraged the victims' relatives.

"Judge Murphy did say in the court at the last court date, any trouble whatsoever youthful offender is off the table and he will be served with the maximum time for each one of those charges," Sandra Lonnborg, mother of one of the victims, said.

It is unclear what the new charges will mean for the plea deal.

"They're speeding. How many lives do we have to lose before the system stops giving these slaps on the wrist?" victim's uncle Mark McGlone said.

Gloes attorney said the knife was never in Gloes possession, but by law he can be charged as an occupant in a car with an illegal weapon. The arrest could force the judge to dump the deal when he is sentenced in May.

If convicted of the top charge against him in the drag race incident, Gloe faces a maximum of five to 15 years in prison.
