Study: NJ TRANSIT Buses, Trains Break Down 4 Times More Frequently Than US Average
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- NJ TRANSIT trains and buses are becoming less and less reliable, statistics show.
According to numbers compiled by the agency, NJ TRANSIT trains break down four times more frequently than the national average, surprising some riders at Penn Station but not others.
"That definitely sounds about right," one man told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern. "It just seems like there's always an issue every time I'm on the train."
"We've had them delayed many times, and I've been on them when they broke down," one woman said.
"I've never had a train break down when I've been on it, so I really couldn't say that much," one man said. "My son uses it constantly back and forth -- he goes to NJIT -- so we've never had a delay."
The reliability of NJ TRANSIT trains, light rail vehicles and buses have all declined over the past two years. Reliability was gauged by the average number of miles a vehicle traveled before breaking down.
NJ TRANSIT buses, however, are still more reliable than ones in New York City.
NJ TRANSIT officials said they are taking steps to prevent breakdowns, including a program to analyze problems with rail equipment, making fleet-wide modifications and replacing problematic components before they fail.
