Seen At 11: Wearable Technology Gives Users Feedback On Health And Fitness

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Wearable technology can monitor how effectively we exercise, how well we eat, and even how healthy we are.

There's no end in sight in terms of what can be done, and as CBS2's Alice Gainer reported, it's woven into our everyday lives as part of our digital dressing.

Glasses that connect to a cellphone via Bluetooth are being touted as the next big thing in smart eyewear. The glasses have a tiny screen inside the lens that projects data. They're expected to be on the market in the summer for about $400.

"It's everywhere. It's whatever you're physically wearing. It doesn't have to be a device. It can be a strip that communicates data," tech expert, Ian Marlow explained.

Marlow said digital dressing has the ability to change our behavior, and even make it better, like when using a sun sensitive UV patch.

It can collect the amount of ultraviolet exposure to the sun, and relay that information to the user such that you can monitor how much sunlight and UV you are receiving.

The UV patch is expected to be at cosmetic counters this summer.

A sun sensitive bracelet has a UV sensor that will notify you via an app when you've had too much exposure and need more sunscreen.

Another bracelet hitting the market offers a more energetic experience.

"Joule is the first wearable bracelet that actually administers caffeine directly into your skin," Adam Paulin explained.

The caffeine comes from a strip in the bracelet and is absorbed directly into your skin.

"With these patches that we use with the bracelet you can get a very slow and steady administration of caffeine over four hours," Paulin said.

The amount of caffeine on the patch is the equivalent of a medium cup of coffee.

Paulin said they can be beneficial for athletes, students, and truckers.

"Anywhere there's a need for a long and steady stream of energy, this if a perfect thing," Paulin said.

The caffeine bracelet will cost around $29 for the bracelet and 30 patches, it should be available by the summer.
