Fire Blasts Through Church In Englewood, New Jersey

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A fire ripped through the roof late Tuesday at a church in Englewood, New Jersey.

The fire broke out just after 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Englewood, at 150 E. Palisade Ave., officials told CBS2.

The flames shot through the roof and high into the air when the blaze was at its height. Some small flames remained by 9 p.m., CBS2's Valerie Castro reported.

Firefighters said the blaze was confined to the sanctuary at the church.

Shira Siegler, 12, saw the fire and called for help.

"I hear like windows shattering and like there's like fire and smoke like everywhere, so then I call 911 and like everyone shows up," she said.

Established in 1860, First Presbyterian is the oldest church in Englewood.

"We really were the home church of most of the persons who founded the town," said the Rev. Richard Hong, pastor of the church. "It does hold a special place in the heart of this town."

There were no injuries in the fire.

Rev. Hong said the church still plans to hold services on Easter Sunday.
