CBS2 Exclusive: Thief Scams UPS Driver With Fake ID To Receive Thousands In Gift Cards Purchased With Stolen Credit Card

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A thief was able to scam a UPS driver with a fake ID in order receive over $6,500 in gift cards he purchased with a stolen credit card.

CBS2's Dave Carlin reported Wednesday, someone stole Alexander Saleh's American Express Card number to purchase 13 gift cards of $500 each.

"That somebody would have the guts to do such a brazen crime," Saleh of Midwood, Brooklyn, told Carlin.

The suspect stood in front of Saleh's apartment building to wait for the UPS truck with the gift cards, CBS2 reported. Surveillance video shows the slender, pale-skinned thief walking up to the truck to get the 13 gift cards.

"He did have a fake ID," Saleh said.

The cards were immediately used at various Apple stores in the city.

"The fact that the driver let this person just get the package off the truck, that's inexcusable," wife Maria Saleh told Carlin.

The Salehs said if the UPS worker brought the package inside the lobby where there is a doorman, they doubt the thief would have been able to get his hands on it, Carlin reported.

The UPS worker who was on the job when the incident happened was not available, but a colleague says he doesn't blame him for what happened because he was tricked with a fake ID.

"You got ID to the same apartment, same building, you're good," the UPS worker told Carlin.

The amount was credited back to the Salehs, so they are not on the hook for it, but they want to know where were the red flags or fraud alerts.

"Nobody emailed, called or stopped the card," said Maria Saleh.

The couple doesn't have any idea how the thief got their credit card information.

They said the lesson is for everyone to double check their own statements more often and that there should be reforms to card and delivery services.
