String Of Brooklyn Burglaries Has Residents On Edge In Williamsburg, Greenpoint
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- A crime spree in Brooklyn has residents on edge, and police are now searching for two bold suspects.
Residents in East Williamsburg and Greenpoint are stunned at what happened in their Brooklyn neighborhoods. In the last five weeks, a string of 17 burglaries has jolted their quiet streets, CBS2's Mark Morgan reported.
Most of the incidents occurred in the early morning hours between 12 midnight and 6 a.m.with thieves grabbing credit cards, debit cards, cash and electronics.
According to what police are telling residents, many times the thieves entered through unlocked doors.
"People would leave their apartments unlocked, these guys would run in and take whatever...I just really kinda thought it was ridiculous not to lock your apartment," Theresa Doddato, an East Williamsburg resident, said.
East Williamsburg resident Mary Ellen Montana showed CBS2 a flyer that police have been handing out urging residents to lock their doors.
"I've lived in this neighborhood my whole life, and we've never had this. I mean, there were robberies, but now it's out of control, it's really out of control," she said.
With concerns about their safety front and center, residents are rethinking protective measures.
"Nobody I know in my building or anywhere has alarm systems and it makes me think 'do we have to go to that level now?' This is just a friendly neighborhood," East Williamsburg resident Paco Lozano said.
Police have released pictures of two men who are wanted in connection with the robberies.
