Prominent NYC ER Doctor Indicted In Sexual Assault Of Four Patients

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP)-- A grand jury has indicted a prominent New York City emergency room doctor with sexually assaulting four women he treated.

An indictment announced Thursday says David Newman victimized three women on separate occasions last August, September and October and a fourth woman in January.

The 45-year-old Mount Sinai Hospital physician has pleaded not guilty. Neither his attorney nor a hospital representative returned requests for comment on the charges.

The initial sex assault allegations came from a woman who was being treated for a shoulder injury. That woman told police on Jan. 11 Newman knocked her out with morphine then committed a lewd act next to her and left DNA on her body.

Newman lives in Montclair, New Jersey home with his wife and two children, both of whom are under 3 years old.

He is also the author of a book on the patient-doctor relationship. In an online biography he claims to be a major in the U.S. Army Reserve who served in Iraq.

"One was sedated to the point of being physically helpless – a nightmare scenario for any patient to endure. I would like to thank these brave women for their strength in coming forward," Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said in a press release.
