Shh! Metro-North Adding Quiet Cars To All Weekday Trains

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- More quiet cars are coming to Metro-North.

Starting April 4, the last two cars on all weekday trains heading for New York City and the first two on trains out of the city will be designated quiet cars. This applies to peak and off-peak trains.

Currently, only rush-hour trains have one quiet car.

Riders are expected to keep their phones and other electronic devices muted, talk in subdued tones and keep headphones on low volume.

To spread and reinforce the message, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said conductors will occasionally hand out cards explaining the rules.

The extra quiet cars are in response to customer suggestions, the MTA said.

But not all commuters were on board with the plan.

"It's not your house, it's mass transit...If you want to get a quiet car, pay extra," one commuter said. "If you want peace and quiet you do things on your own time."
