Police: Driver Who Struck Woman In Jersey City Was Fleeing Attack

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police said Tuesday that a driver who allegedly struck and critically injured a woman in Jersey City was fleeing a mob of attackers.

The vehicle was headed west on Union Street near Martin Luther King Drive early Monday evening at around 6:30 p.m. when it jumped the curb and hit the woman, pinning her to a fence underneath the car, Jersey City police said.

The vehicle also knocked down a light pole, police said.

The 25-year-old victim was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health in critical condition with two broken legs and internal bleeding, police said. The driver was also injured and was taken into police custody at the same hospital, CBS2 reported.

Seynabou Fall, of Bayonne, has now been charged with aggravated assault, criminal attempted homicide and a weapons count.

A city spokeswoman told The Jersey Journal that officials initially thought Fall intentionally ran over the woman Monday night because the two were involved in an ongoing quarrel.

But police on Tuesday said Fall was sprayed with a chemical irritant when she approached the woman, and roughly 20 people then converged on her car. Fall tried to drive away, but her car then jumped the curb, hit the woman and knocked down a traffic light pole.
