NJ Volunteer Firefighters Say Facebook Post Led To Suspension Threat

GARFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Officials in New Jersey are reviewing a fire department's social media policies after two volunteers said they were threatened with suspension over a Facebook post.

Both volunteer firefighters for Company 1 in Garfield, Paul Mellor and his fiance, Danielle Szep, were proud to incorporate their turnout coats on their wedding invitation.

But when Szep posted a photo of the invite on Facebook, she was told to take it down or face suspension under their chief's new rule which Mellor says wasn't clearly explained, WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron reported.

"The only way that we got informed of this rule was a text message," Mellor said. "I thought it was very extreme."

The couple went to the city council, which now wants to come up with a written policy regarding social media posts.
