Fans Disappointed After Yankees Postpone Season Opener

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Fans who traveled to the Bronx to see the Yankees play their season opener were left out in the cold Monday.

The cold rain outside of Yankee Stadium early Monday morning cast a Shakespearean-like quandary over Opening Day -- to play or not to play.

Then came the news from the Yankees at 8:31 a.m. via Twitter that the game was postponed until Tuesday afternoon.

It was 40 degrees and drizzling when Monday's opener was called, 4 1/2 hours before the scheduled first pitch.

Fans of the Bombers were bummed.

"I've been waiting for this for a whole year now," said Richard Vasquez of Co-Op City.

"We bought the tickets online and now we're here, but we won't see the game today," said Angel Aponte, of Ridgefield, New Jersey.

Many fans hoping to catch the 114th home opener in franchise history took the day off from work and made the schlep into the Bronx, rolling the dice on whether or not the weather would cooperate.

"I was so disappointed when I heard what happened. I'm looking to get my ticket exchanged right now. This was the only day I could go," one fan told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa.

John Cervantes and his friend John Faz came all the way from Austin, Texas.

"We need to get a dome over here, then we can play baseball in the spring," Cervantes said.

"I had a poncho in here ready to go, had my waterproof jacket on, but what are you going to do?" said Joe Badam, who came from Scranton, Pennsylvania. "Pretty miserable right now. I'm trying to go somewhere to get something to eat or maybe grab a beer."

Charles and Lee Modenbach were visiting from Louisiana and won't be able to make it Tuesday.

"This was the last day of our vacation," Lee Modenbach said. "It would have been an awesome final day."

This was the team's first postponed opener since 2008.
