Police: Bronx Man Hires Uber Car, Crashes It Amid Cop Chase While Driver Naps
COLESVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Bronx man crashed an Uber car while trying to elude police after taking the wheel so the driver he hired could take a nap, authorities said.
Juan Carlos, 20, was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, driving without a license and several other traffic violations, New York State Police said.
On Saturday, police said Carlos hired Uber driver Corey Robinson in Philadelphia to take him 200 miles to a college in central New York.
After Robinson asked Carlos to take the wheel while he took a nap, a trooper clocked Carlos going 86 mph in a 65-mph zone on Interstate 81 near Binghamton, police said.
The trooper tried to stop the car, but police said Carlos refused to stop.
When the driver woke up and asked why he was driving so fast, Carlos told him it was because the police were chasing them. Robinson demanded that Carlos pull over, but police said he refused.
Carlos crashed soon afterward. The men suffered minor injuries.
Both were taken into custody, but Robinson was subsequently released without charges.
