Elected Officials In Queens Call For Action After Fatal Hit-And-Run
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Elected officials in Queens are calling for action after a fatal hit-and-run earlier this week.
City Council Member Costa Constantinides asked the public to come forward Friday with information about the crash that killed a 45-year-old man at the intersection of 30th Road and 21st Street in Astoria.
"Anyone who saw something, we're asking them to please, please come forward," he said.
The accident happened just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said the man was in the roadway on 21st Street when he was hit by a southbound dark-colored sedan. The vehicle then fled the scene, police said.
The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
People who live in the area say the intersection is especially treacherous. They had asked for a traffic light, but the city refused, WCBS 880's John Metaxas reported.
Meanwhile, State Sen. Michael Gianaris wants to toughen penalties for hit-and-runs in Albany.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
