Report: Jacob DeGrom Headed To Florida For Son's Birth

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- DeBaby is coming.

Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom has left the team to be with his pregnant wife in Florida, ESPN reported Monday afternoon. She has been due to give birth to the couple's first child, a son, since last week, timing that put deGrom's first start of the season in doubt.

DeGrom said he would remain with the team until he received word that his wife had gone into labor.

The right-hander pitched six innings Friday in the Mets' home-opening 7-2 victory over Philadelphia, but left the game with tightness in his right lat. He will miss his next start because of the injury.

Mets manager Terry Collins said he has no immediate plans to put deGrom on paternity leave and call up a player from Triple-A Las Vegas, but he did say that move remains on the table if the Mets' bullpen is overworked in Monday night's game against the Marlins, ESPN reported. Placing deGrom on the paternity leave list would prevent the team from backdating a potential DL stint.
