Police: Woman Fights Off Attacker In Attempted Rape In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman fought off a would-be rapist during an early morning attack this week in the Bronx, police said.

As CBS2's Hazel Sanchez reported, police late Tuesday afternoon were hoping someone would recognize the suspect and help put him behind bars.

The 47-year-old victim was walking along Webb Avenue in the Kingsbridge Heights section of the Bronx around 2 a.m. Monday, when police said a man started following her, police said.

When she reached the corner on Eames Place, the man grabbed her from behind and pulled her pants down, police said.

The victim screamed and punched the suspect, who then ran away.

CBS2's Sanchez talked with stunned residents along Webb Avenue.

"Oh my gosh, it's surprising," one woman said.

"It's kind of rough -- you've got to be careful; you've got to always pay attention. Keep your eyes out," another said.

Surveillance video of the suspect showed him inside a neighborhood restaurant, dressed in the bold outfit he was wearing during the attack. His bright red vest and black, red and white shoes were hard to miss.

Police the man was also seen wearing a black do-rag and black pants, and was about 25 years old.

Police hoped someone would remember seeing the man or who he was. CBS2's Sanchez showed the suspect's picture to women near the crime scene.

"That's crazy. It's dangerous," one woman said. "We need help in getting these people like that off the streets."

"What is happening nowadays, you know, it's disgusting, you know," another said. "So they should take him and take him to jail."

The victim's screams and punches scared her attacker away. The incident left some residents on edge.

"Scared -- I don't, I don't," one woman said. "I'll try not to walk by myself now, especially at night."

Many local women said they will be extra cautious now in case the attacker comes back looking for a new victim.
