Mets' DeGrom Pitches Shortened Bullpen Session, Will Miss Next Start

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom, who is battling a lat injury, was not healthy enough to toss a full bullpen session Friday and will reportedly miss his second scheduled start.

DeGrom left last week's home opener against Philadelphia after six innings because a muscle in his right side was tight. New York decided last weekend to skip his next turn in the rotation, and deGrom went to Florida for the birth Monday of his first child.

The Mets are playing at Cleveland this weekend, but the team has allowed him to work out at their spring training complex in Florida so that he can remain near his wife. He threw 25 pitches Friday and is scheduled to throw again Sunday, Newsday reported. A typical bullpen session is 40 to 50 pitches.

DeGrom underwent an MRI last weekend, Collins said Friday.

Mets manager Terry Collins indicated earlier in the week that if deGrom's injury continued to linger, he might have to be placed on the disabled list.

"He's a big piece of the puzzle," Collins said Friday. "So he needs a little more of a full 'pen to make a determination of where he is at."

A lat injury last season kept pitcher Steven Matz out for two months.

Logan Verrett will start in deGrom's place Tuesday at Philadelphia, the New York Daily News reported. In a 2-1 win over the Miami Marlins, Verrett pitched six scoreless innings.
