4 Men Sought In Credit Card Skimming Incidents At Manhattan Supermarkets

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Friday were searching for four men who allegedly put skimming devices on credit card swiping terminals in Manhattan grocery stores.

As 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported, the NYPD heard times between Feb. 27 and March 29 from victims whose information was stolen by a skimming device on credit card swipe machines, and then used to make phony cards.

The suspects ended up taking money from the victims' bank accounts at ATMs in Manhattan and Queens with the forged cards, police said.

One woman named Barbara said she thought she was being careful.

"I always use the machine near where you check out; where there's a person there," she said. "I would assume that they know; that they check their own machines, right?"

Wrong. Police said point-of-sale machines were the ones that were being tampered with.

A man named George said he doesn't even use plastic.

"Only in an emergency, and even then, I think I carry enough cash – but you never know," he said.

Police released photos of four suspects who allegedly were seen using the fraudulent duplicate cards at ATMs.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS or (888) 57-PISTA for Spanish, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
