Report: The Cicadas Are Coming

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- Who can forget that distinct and incredibly annoying sound?

The loud buzz of billions of mating cicadas will once again return to the East Coast in May or even earlier if it's warm enough, WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported.

Cicadas are rather bizarre bugs. They spend several weeks above ground mating and laying eggs before they die. The babies burrow underground for 17 years before they emerge to continue the cycle.

The blog Cicada Mania predicts a brood born in 1999 will soon pop up in a number of states, including New York.

City dwellers need not worry. The blog reports the bugs, which are essentially harmless, will only appear on Long Island.
