FBI, NYPD Make 36 Arrests In East Harlem Gang Takedown

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Dozens of people were arrested Tuesday morning in an Upper Manhattan gang takedown.

The FBI and NYPD rounded up 36 men and women allegedly involved in drug and firearms dealing at the East River Houses, Washington Houses and Metro-North Houses in East Harlem, 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon reported.

The NYPD shared video of the takedown.

The suspects were part of at least two heavily-armed gangs, according the the indictments.

The suspects allegedly sold crack cocaine, prescription pills and marijuana at the public housing complexes, two hospitals and one New York City school, Rincon reported. They were also responsible for numerous assaults and robberies, according to the indictments.

The investigation dates back several years but reportedly intensified after the death of Officer Randolph Holder last year. Holder was shot and killed while responding to a gang-related shooting at the East River Houses.

The neighborhood has seen a recent spike in gang activity, including a shooting that claimed the life of a teenager.
