Star Of CBS Drama 'Hawaii Five-0' To Make Broadway Debut In 'The King And I'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There's a new king on Broadway as Daniel Dae Kim, who stars in the CBS drama "Hawaii Five-0," makes his Broadway debut in "The King and I."

"I started my career here in New York many years ago and to be able to come back to the Lincoln Center to make my debut is very special," Kim told CBS2's Jill Nicolini.

For the past six seasons, Kim has starred on "Hawaii Five-0" as Det. Chin Ho.

"This is my 13th year on television in Hawaii. I don't know of many actors that are able to say that," Kim said.

Kim is now taking over the role of the King of Siam in "The King and I."

"I hope that they take their preconceived notions show, you know, being very dainty and kind of dated to something that feels immediate and relevant to today," Kim said.

The musical follows the relationship between the King and Anna, who is a British school teacher that he hires to help educate his children.

Anna is played by three-time Tony nominee Marin Mazzie. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last May and is now in remission.

"It feels amazing. I've had quite a journey this year and so to have it culminate with coming back with this beautiful, epic, gorgeous production," Mazzie said. "I feel very grateful and very blessed."

She actually came to see the production last year to see her friend Kelly O'Hara who starred as Anna.

"I was so moved by the relationship between her and the King in their journey together," Mazzie said.

Both actors just started rehearsing just eight days ago and since they are taking over the lead roles together, Mazzie feels confident that Kim will have her back.

Kim and Mazzie will be starring in "The King and I" at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre beginning May 3.
