Yankees Wives Team Up To Take Care Of Military Moms

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Military mothers and moms-to-be were honored Friday with a special baby shower.

Most of the mothers not only have husbands deployed overseas, but also live on a base far from the natural support staff of family.

As CBS2's Steve Overmyer explained there were laughs and tears on Friday, both familiar to every mother, or expecting mother as Operation Shower held a baby shower for 75 very grateful military moms.

Jessica Jacob from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is 8 months pregnant and her husband is about to deploy.

"It's gonna be hard without the extra set of hands. Usually we swap roles. I'll do it during the week and he'll give me a hand on weekends, but now I gotta start planning ahead," she said.

The event was hosted by Yankees wives Jessica Gardner and Casey Headly. It offered something military moms have been missing.

"We don't get the recognition. Everyone sees the finished product, but they don't see all the hard work behind it. So these events are like a special day at the spa," Jacob said.

It's a richly deserved honor, and a little financial relief.

"This is awesome. I don't have to go shopping. Baby clothes are so hard to find, and they did the work for me," she said.

The moms-to-be were also given baby bags and blankets.

Headly drew inspiration from a friend who went through a similar experience.

"I have a friend who had a baby who was 5-months-old when her husband was deployed, and he didn't get back until she was 12 months. She said I did everything I could to keep her from walking before he got back, and it work. He got back before she took her first steps," she said.

The total value of the box of baby supplies is around $700. If you want to nominate yourself or someone else for a nearby shower, or wish to donate you can fill out the B Is For Baby Request Form.

You can also donate directly to the cause by sending items to : Operation Shower, 7382 Pershing Ave, Clayton, MO, 63130.
