Bobby Knight: Donald Trump Has 'The Guts' To Drop An Atomic Bomb

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Legendary Indiana University basketball coach Bobby Knight said Donald Trump would have "the guts" to drop an atomic bomb.

Introducing the Republican presidential front-runner at a rally in Evansville on Thursday, Knight compared the billionaire to former President Harry Truman.

"Harry Truman, with what he did in dropping and having the guts to drop the bomb in 1944, saved billions of American lives," Knight said.

He continued, "And that's what Harry Truman did and he became one of the three great presidents of the United States and here's a man who would do the same thing because he's going to become one of the four great presidents of the United States."

Knight got the year wrong, however, as the United States dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Knight also mocked the idea of Trump needing to "act presidential" and said similar criticism had been levied against Truman.

According to the latest CBS News tally, Trump has accrued 977 of the 1,237 to secure the nomination.
