NYC Food Truck Lunch: Sesame Steak From Chop Steak

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

We found another new street vendor in midtown this week, serving grilled, marinated steak in five varieties. This is only the second week Chop Steak has been in business, and service was a little slow, but the upside was fresh, flame-grilled steak!

The menu is small and beef-only. You won't find chicken, pork or tofu at this Asian-influenced street cart. There's chop steak, basil steak, curry steak, sesame steak and the classic steak. All are $9 except the classic, which is $10. We went for the sesame steak.

It was a good 10-15 minutes waiting for our order, but not because they were disorganized. It had more to do with the number of people ahead of us, and that each lunch was cooked to order.

Getting right to the point, the meat was skirt steak, which is one of our favorites to marinate and grill at home. They marinated the meat in sesame oil and a slightly sweet, mild vinegar sauce. After cooking, it was topped with sesame seeds.

The steak was grilled to order (medium), tender and quite tasty. There was plenty of steak in the serving, and you can top it with their white sauce or a spicy mayo sauce. We asked for a little spicy mayo on the side to taste it, but wanted to try the steak without a sauce for the first time.

For side dishes, the menu said white rice and steamed vegetables, but the symbol on the cart showed beef, rice, veggies and french fries. Wouldn't you know it, the symbol was right, not the menu. Lunch came with beef over white rice, plus steamed veggies and french fries on the side. That's definitely enough for us for lunch!

The steamed veggies were cooked right, not too hard or soft, and were mostly sliced carrots and broccoli.

BTW, the spicy mayo was fine. Not very spicy, but it did add some flavor to the beef and veggies when we dipped into the sauce.

We can't find a social media presence for Chop Steak, but you can find Chop Steak on 49th St between 6th & 7th Ave (closer to 6th) on Mon, Wed & Fri. On Tues & Thurs, they are near the NY Times building, on 8th Ave between 40th & 41st St.

Enjoy! We did.
