Police: Long Island Robber Using Stolen Garage Door Openers To Access Homes

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)-- Police are warning residents in Long Island to be cautious after a suspect broke into cars in the driveway, and then gained access to homes.

Marie Digangi told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall she was sound asleep with her husband when the suspect, who was caught on surveillance video, broke into their unlocked car in the driveway. From there, he took the garage door opener and managed to get inside their home in Hauppauge.

"And you're supposed to be safe. This is your safe haven. Nobody's supposed to be in here," she said.

Digangi said amazingly, the suspect went through some of her belongings downstairs, but did not take a thing.

"During the evening, I got up about... I don't know, 2:30, 3 o'clock in the morning. Maybe that scared him off, that's what the police think," she said.

The crook also broke into a home on Janet Court in the same manner by using the garage door opener. This time, police said the suspect stole of number of items.
