Quit It: Long Beach Bans Smoking On Local Beaches

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The City of Long Beach is telling smokers to call it quits when it comes to having a smoke on their beaches.

The new laws will ban sales of any smoking paraphernalia -- including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars and smoking pipes -- on the boardwalk on beach, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

Area residents had mixed reactions to the new law, which takes effect immediately.

"Too bad. They should quit smoking," one resident said. "It's for everybody to enjoy and when you're walking by particular buildings with people standing outside, it's offensive."

"It seems a little excessive," Dennis Clark, a resident, said. "Seems to be the way of the world, they're legislating everything more and more. Don't know where it's going."

Long Beach is one of several institutions to place a ban on smoking. A smoking ban on Long Island Rail Road platforms was instituted in 2011. Smoking at public parks in New York State is also banned.

It was not immediately clear what the penalty would be for violating the rule.
