Police Release Surveillance Images Of Suspect In Williamsburg Attempted Rape

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Thursday released surveillance images and video of a suspect in an attempted rape in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Police said a would-be rapist attacked a 37-year-old woman in Williamsburg around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, CBS2's Valerie Castro reported Wednesday night. The victim had just returned home to her building after buying groceries, police sources said.

The woman was getting her mail when she noticed a man with a green hooded sweat shirt in the locked entryway. He was randomly hitting buzzers to get inside.

As the woman went upstairs, someone buzzed the man in. The man followed the woman up to the fifth floor, grabbed her by the waist and managed to slide down her jeans and underwear, police said.

The man was eventually scared off by the woman's screams. Police said he ran out of the building and took off south on Driggs Avenue.

A man who lives on the fifth floor did not want to be identified, but said the woman attacked was OK Wednesday. Other residents were nervous.

"Of course, scared, you know, because you never know what could happen," said building resident Anna Medrano.

Building management tucked fliers into the residents' doors after the assault, with safety reminders. They emphasized that people should not buzz in any guests they do not know or anyone they are not expecting.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male between the ages of 22 and 25, standing 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 150 to 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a green hooded sweat shirt, light-colored pants and black sneakers, and was seen going down the street with a black umbrella.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS or (888) 57-PISTA for Spanish, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
